Research: Blog Task 4 (Art of the title) - Analysis of title sequence The Avengers

The Avengers (analysis of title sequence)

Example of the credits:

Which credits do we see & the order:
The credits we see in this title sequence is the people were involved making the film. The order we see the credits is by seeing the main crew who was involved in producing the movie the 'production crew', starting with the Director Joss Whedon, The story by Zak Penn and Joss Whedon, Screenplay Joss Whedon, Producer Kevin Feige, Executive producers, Director of photography, Production designer, Editors, Costume designer, Music by, visual effects producer, Casting by Sarah Halley FINN, C.S.A and Randi Hiller, C.S.A.. It then continues with the stars of the film (actors/actresses) Robert Downey Jr(Iron Man), Chris Evans(Captain America), Mark Ruffalo(The Hulk), Chris Hemsworth(Thor), Scarlett Johanson(Black Widow) and Jeremy Renner(The Hawkeye) and continues with the minor actress/actors and ending with A Joss Whedon Film.

What font type is used for the titles?/Where do we see it in the frame?

The font used in this title sequence is a bold 'Verdana' which stands out and is used for both the title and the credits. The credits and title is in capital letters and the colours that are used is white/silver to make it eye catching and outstanding. Through out the title sequence each name appears in the centre, top, bottom and the sides of the screen. As each name appears the camera zooms in and focuses on it.

What happens behind the font?

Behind the fonts there is the each characters iconic symbols that resembles their power/superhero. e.g. Captain Americas Shield and the glasses Bruce Banner uses 'The Hulk' when human. The theme song of the film is used in the title sequence, which is very dramatic and resembles each character.

As seen above Robert Downey Jr name is next to his characters Iron Man armour.

Why I chose this sequence?

The reason why i chose this sequence is because i really love/enjoy watching The Avengers. I chose this title sequence because there is a lot of people involved in making the movie which meant that there would be more credits and more visual aspects of the film e.g. something which resembles each character like Thors hammer. I really like this title sequence because it is SHIELD oriented which is amazing as there is both a TV series and movies (cross media convergence). The main reason why i chose this title sequence to analyse is because my favourite actos/actresses star init i.e. Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johanson, Cobie Smulders, Mark Ruffalo and many more. The plot of the film captivates me and I find it very interesting and can't wait until the movie is out in 2015.

The Designers response to the title
Steve Viola. The original concept of the sequence came from brain storming and having guidance from MARVEL allowing them to focus on the specific areas. Marvel wanted a photorealistic look. Steve Viola was not only striving to make this only a visual effects sequence but to "engage and capture the audience even after the film.

Steve Viola thought the title sequence was "interesting to work through". As some characters didn’t have much to go on without using their actual bodies, and getting each credit on the respective objects proved difficult without making it feel disjointed. For example characters like black widow and the Hulk didn't have many assets to go. He then decided to focus more on Bruce Banner’s iconic elements like his glasses and his laboratory. Steve Viola said "There was a lot of discussion about whether we wanted to represent anyone else, such as Loki. Ultimately, Marvel and Joss agreed that we should stick to the key members of S.H.I.E.L.D."

Steve Viola said the hardest part about this sequence was the macro photography, because everyone sees everything. While designing the title sequence he scrutinised every detail, every texture, every glint because you can see everything. He also said that "We’re very proud of the final product and thrilled by the audience reactions around the world!".
